( Please Note : This Book is Rated R )
My Synopsis :
A long summer means an even longer winter and with a decade of summer at an end, winter is coming. When Lord Eddard is named the Hand of the King by King Robert, he refuses. But, when safety threatens the crown and the realm, he is the only one who can uncover deadly secrets that may have cost lives. Treachery, lie, secrets and power are at play. Worse, heir of the deposed Dragon King has grown in exile in the Free Cities. He claims vengeance and the Iron Throne. With his family broken and their lives at stake, Eddard Stark learns that When you play the game of thrones, you either win or die.
Now, I am a HUGE fan of the TV Show and with it going on an year break, I thought I'd give the books a try. Before I begin my review, let me just say George R. R. Martin, David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and ALL the Cast and Crew are AWESOME for making one of the most MEMORABLE stories in history!!! I hope they keep on making great stuff in the future!! They deserve a round of applause!!!!
Side Note :
George R. R. Martin is a talented writer, who is spot on about people and how the world works. And this is a really Long series, so the question is will I recommend it to Everyone and is it a Must Read? I would say.... If you're not fond of big book and heavy prose and have terrible memory power for details, Probably not.... watch the show and if you like it, you can try the book or if you like big books and detailed prose and this review made you curious, go ahead and read it..cause it's worth it!
And yes, I am going to read the other books!
Who in your opinion is the scariest antagonist of all time? Which book is it? Mine would be Sarren from The Blood of Eden Series! That guy is a maniac!

Okay...Let's get onto the book discussion!
Things I Liked :
- World - Building is excellent and detailed! It is quite jarring when you first start reading it, but when you get used to it, it is great!
- It's MEDIEVAL!!!!!! ( Well, I LOVE Medieval stuff so I thought it fitting to include that as a pro!!! )
- GREAT, MEMORABLE, REALISTIC CHARACTERS, all of them! I love it when a character is complex and not just good or bad and you can connect with every single character! Characters are this book's strength!!!
- The things that happen are near realistic for a fantasy book. Many people bash Game of Thrones because so many characters die and the whole story is very brutal but, that's why I enjoy and find refreshing in this series. As much as I love happy endings, real world is not a fairytale and people die! I like that George R. R. Martin doesn't shy away from that.
- George R. R. Martin's writing is good. Quotes!! Simply put they are quotable!
- PLOT!!! It is Awesome, Tense and it has everything - fighting, power play, romance, family, magic etc...!!!
- It is a Really LONG book!!! I don't hate big books, but somewhere around half of it, It just dragged on and on......!And they were explaining all these stuff and Names! I cannot remember them! It was so confusing and put me off for sometime! Seriously, if I hadn't watched the show, I couldn't name off even 20 characters even if my life depended on it.

Oh, this is my favorite series of all time. I have finished all five books and now waiting impatiently for book #6. I didn't know the show is going on a year hiatus, that's so not cool. I agree it's a big fat tome but Martin's writing style is easy to digest, you'll reach page 1000 within no time.
ReplyDeleteAs for the scariest villain, I think it would be Lord Tywin Lannister. He's so wickedly devious I can't guess what's on his mind.
keep writing! :)
Actually I'm Currently reading the last few chapters in A Dance with Dragons and I LOVE it!! I do agree with you George is Pretty straight forward in his writing and that's why I was able to finish nearly 5 Big Books in the span of a month.
DeleteTywin is so methodical, it's scary! I can never actually consider him a villain..he's in the grey area for me. I really do like him and respect him.
Thank you :)
